Do you know? iPhone is getting A2DP!

Image

Well, let's start from the beginning. iPhone 3.0 OS is the next generation operating system for the iPhone, iPod Touch and next Apple devices (who knows what they will be).

More than 100 new features will be added, and this time Stereo Bluetooth will not be neglected too. Oh, how many speculations were caused by the absence of A2DP in iPhone. Whys and whens filled up all the comments and gadget forums. Now an agony of suspense and the anxious expectations are over :)

Let's see what else we get:

Concerning music:
  • Note synching with iTunes
  • Shake to shuffle music
  • From third-party applications: Audio recording and accessing the iPhone/iPod music library.
And more:
  • Automatic login in Safari
  • Anti-phising
  • Copy & Paste text
  • Copy & Paste photos
  • Multimedia messaging
  • New Spotlight
  • Landscape keyboard
  • Search in Mail, Calendar, and iPod
  • Wi-Fi auto-login
  • Support for new calendar types
  • Improved stocks application
  • Extended parental controls
  • 3G Tethering

And, hmm... dont cry, but there is a bad news for many iPhone users: iPhone OS 3.0 is an update for all the iPhone generations, but there will be no A2DP support in the first one.

As for the price, the update is free for all iPhone owners, but iPod touch users will be obliged to buy it for $9.95.

Go here and subscribe for the beta. Good Luck!

I bought the Motorola DC800 which connects to my stereo. My Iphone streams this to device perfectly. Great range. The output is RCA but you can get an adapter to support a 3.5mm. I'd love to see more stereos/receivers with built in bluetooth, eh?

I have an iPhone 3g and now that I've upgraded to 3.0 I expected to be able to use my philips shb6100 headphones to listen to music - but it's still just as broken as it was on 2.x
Has anyone got A2DP to work?
Has apple done something evil like only allow A2DP on apple headphones?

So now that the iPhone can stream music, I'm looking for some sort of bluetooth receiver that has a 3.5mm output. If that exists, I can plug that into my aftermarket stereo and I wouldn't need to run a cable from my iPhone to my stereo. Any suggestions on a good receiver like that?

I purchased the Sony DR-BT22iK from Amazon for $49 and it works fine. It takes a bit of setting up to get phone, music, and FM, but it can be done if you follow the instructions for "other devices" than those listed as compatible.

Unfortunately they've discontinued the Apple Bluetooth Headset since I posted this. Here's to hoping that they make another small, subtle, non-blinky/flashy/cyborg looking headset to replace it. Or someone else does... as long as it's good, I don't care who makes it. I just want a BT headset that blends in and doesn't call attention to itself, and the Apple one is the best I found.
